A clutch disc is part of your vehicles manual transmission system. It’s responsible for delivering power from your engine to the transmission. A clutch disc is a steel plate covered in friction material and goes in-between your flywheel and the pressure plate. In the center of your clutch disc is a hub that is splined to fit the transmission shaft. When the clutch is engaged, the disc is pressed between the pressure plate and the flywheel. Thereon, the power from the engine is transmitted through the hub and into your transmission.
It’s important to know the signs of a failing clutch disc. When your clutch is failing it will begin to slip against the flywheel. This will not allow your power to properly transfer from the engine to your transmission. A common sign that lets you know the life of your clutch disc is coming to an end would be if your transmission is not going into gear. Wear to your clutch disc can be caused from overheating. Other signs your clutch may be on its way out could include grinding, or any change in your clutch pedal.
Key factors when upgrading your clutch.
When upgrading to a McLeod clutch kit there are several factors to keep in mind when making a decision. First and foremost, you need to know the year make a model of your vehicle, as well as the engine size. Next it’s important to think of your engine, is it stock or modified? It’s important to know the HP and torque of your engine to help you make a better choice. The diameter and spline on the input shaft of the transmission will need to be known if the transmission is not the stock trans.
Other factors to take into consideration would be your tires. Will you have stock tires or something more aggressive? The more aggressive the tire, the more clutch that will be needed. The weight of your vehicle must also be considered, especially if you have significantly increased it.
Lastly, one of the most important factors to think of is how you intend to drive your vehicle. Will you be towing with this vehicle? Will you be using this vehicle on the track or for street use? Some clutch kits are designed for street use only while others are designed for street and occasional track use. If you’re looking for something more aggressive there are race only units available. It is extremely important to match the recommended use of the clutch to the way you will be using your vehicle.
