Tie Bars / Tension Rods / Under Bars

Control arms are the links between the frame and the wheels, and the mounts for suspension components like shocks, springs, and sway bars. They pivot in response to road irregularities and the springs, allowing the wheels to move up and down. There are many different types of control arms and they vary in shape and construction according to the design of the suspension. However, all have bushings where they mount to the frame, and bushings or ball joints where they attach to the knuckle/spindle or axle.

The most familiar control arms may be the front suspension A-Arms, or "double wishbones" of the SLA (Short & Long Arm) suspension, but there are also the single beam lower arms commonly used with MacPherson struts, as well as the radius arms/strut rods that brace them. Trailing arms are a type pf control arm commonly used with solid axle rear suspensions, and independent rear suspensions may have trailing arms, lateral links, A-arms or other types. The huge variety of suspension designs prohibits a detailed discussion of every kind.
