The importance of the flywheel and clutch is well-known to anyone who has ever driven a vehicle with a standard or manual transmission. Every time you press the clutch pedal, the clutch and flywheel will quickly perform a number of tasks as you move the gear shifter, and when you release the pedal, the components will work in reverse to engage the gear you need.
The flywheel is a circular object with a number of teeth on it, and it is designed to store energy for a short period of time which shows why it needs to be made of extremely strong metals. The clutch plate is connected to the transmission, and it performs similar tasks so that when you release the clutch pedal, the transmission is in the right gear, the flywheel can smoothly connect to it, and your engine continues operating without even knowing what happened. Every component is made of high strength steel to allow it to deal with the high pressures they are under, and they are usually able to last for a long time if you treat them properly.
However, if you are not treating them properly or if they reach a certain age, you will notice a few problems. One of the problems is an inability to smoothly change speed, or an inability to change gear at all, which can occur once the clutch and flywheel are completely broken down. Before these problems occur, the clutch plate can become worn down after much use, making it difficult to engage and disengage, or the flywheel can have similar problems for the same reasons. If the teeth on either are beginning to break and wear down, you may find the clutch ''slips''.
